EDGEWATER — A theater production that explores the impact of being thrust into the public gaze is debuting at Mercy Street Theatre Company this month.

"The Bird Girl," which is not related to the Oscar-winning film "Bird Man," will debut at Mercy Street Theatre Company March 19-28 at Unity Lutheran Church, 1212 W. Balmoral Ave.

The main character, Amity, who is played by Sonja Mata, is living in a remote asylum before a ringmaster finds her and brings her to a traveling freak show, where she becomes "The Bird Girl," according to a news release. There, she both enjoys the spotlight and has to confront memories from her troubled past.

The show was written by playwright E.J.C. Calvert and directed by artistic director Julia Rohed.

Tickets cost $10 for students and industry professionals and $15 for general admission; they can be bought online
