AVONDALE — Moe’s Tavern is hosting a classic Battle of the Bands, and semifinals kick off this week.

The Avondale music venue and bar at 2937 N. Milwaukee Ave. will host its annual “Indie $500 Battle of the Bands” Friday, March 13 featuring 30 local acts.

Preliminary rounds ended last month but a championship round is set for March 27, where those 30 bands will compete for $500 in cash along with other prizes, according to announcement.

“You may not know the band but what is becoming widely known [is that] the music at Moe's is always good,” an event release for the battle read. “Moe’s is a music lover’s Mecca on North Milwaukee Avenue, located in the heart of what the Chicago Reader predicts to be one of the next ‘hipster migration’ neighborhoods — Chicago’s culturally-diverse, artist-friendly Avondale.”

Moe’s Tavern bills itself as “the newest and only music venue in Avondale” — featuring live music five nights a week, including a Sunday jazz jam, a Wednesday open mic, Thursday by DJ Rasta and a rotation  of touring every weekend.
