5 Things You Maybe Did Not Know Were Happening in Wicker Area this Weekend

By Alisa Hauser | March 6, 2015 10:02am | Updated on March 6, 2015 10:23am

WICKER PARK —  If you see people dressed up in costumes and rolling through the streets with shopping carts, do not be alarmed, it is just the 10th annual Chiditarod, one of five things you can watch or do this weekend.

Cheer on Chiditarod X:

Set to begin at 12:30 p.m. at 1900 W. Hubbard St. on Saturday, the race will include 750 participants, who will be in teams of 5 as they race through city streets.

Part competition, part carnival, the CHIditarod is “possibly the world’s largest mobile food drive," organizers boast. Each team will contribute at least 65 pounds of food to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Can't make the starting line?  Cheer the teams on as they approach various "checkpoints," including 5 Star, Emporium Arcade Bar and more.

Buy a Heavy Fjallraven Parka on the Cheap for Next Winter

Blackhawks stars from Sweden, including left winger Joakim Nordstrom, right, popped by the new Fjallraven store's grand opening party on Thursday at 1708 N. Damen Ave.

(l to r.)  David Rundblad, Marcus Krueger, Nordstrom:

Fjallraven's Manager Clay Harvey tells DNAinfo Chicago that select winter apparel items, including parkas, are priced up to 30-percent off. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 6 7 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Savor the Slow Art of a Perfect Cup of Coffee

A coffee maker funded with a $100,000 Kickstarter campaign last April is now on sale at Unison, a Wicker Park home goods store at 1911 W. Division St.

Local artist, designer and professor Craighton Berman will be at Unison from noon -2 p.m. Sunday to provide a demonstration and free tasting.  Want to bring it home, too? The makers cost $99.

Behold, the "Squaresmark," a new Caramel-Stuffed Doughnut

Debuting on Friday and available through March 20, the "Squaresmark," is a new doughnut created by Chef John Manion, from West Loop’s La Sirena Clandestina.

The caramel on the square-shaped version of a classic bismack is blanketed by a light fluffy donut and topped with "the lightest sprinkle of sea salt," according to the shop's Facebook page. Even sweeter, $.25 of each $3.25 donut purchase will benefit UN 86’d— a group that provides monetary assistance to restaurant professionals in need.

Enjoy a Traditional Polish Dinner, Dance the Polka!

Catered by Kasia's Deli, the annual benefit, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, will offer a buffet with Polish sausage, pierogi, cucumber salad, chicken legs, desserts, coffee and juice.  There will also be a bake sale, raffles, Polish music "spinning" and opportunities to dance the polka.

The event takes place in the school's cafeteria, 1255 N. Noble St. Tickets are $10 and can be bought here.
