What We're Reading: Chicago's Girl Scout Cookies Are Better Than Yours

By DNAinfo Staff | March 5, 2015 12:32pm

DOWNTOWN — After you read about a wave-powered pipe organ possibly coming to Lake Michigan and the high cost of rent in Chicago these days, check out these stories.

Draft Party: David Matthews is reading about recent meetings between NFL and ESPN executives planning next month’s NFL Draft in Chicago. Among the ideas: a “Draft Town” extending from Grant Park to Congress Pkwy., where football enthusiasts can play games and get autographs during the three-day event, the Tribune reports.

A Tale of Two Thin Mints: It’s that most wonderful time of the year — when Girl Scouts (or more likely their parents) start making good on cookie orders. While mowing through a box of Thin Mints, Patty Wetli became obsessed with this graphic from the LA Times, which maps the distribution network of the Scouts’ two cookie providers and how their biscuits differ. All Tagalongs are not created equal, it seems. Chicago, in her opinion, gets the better end of the deal, but if you were thinking of moving to Central Illinois, you might want to reconsider...

Roving Packs of Coyotes: On the south lakefront, everyone’s got a theory for where the coyote dens are in Chicago. Sam Cholke is reading The South Side Weekly’s take on why the South Side packs are larger and seen so much more often.

How Chicago’s Swampy Soil Affected the City’s Architecture: Early engineers compared the city’s soil to “jelly cake,” which raises the question: How were our skyscrapers built? Mina Bloom is listening to Curious City on WBEZ to find out more. Turns out, The Monadnock Building, located Downtown, was floated on the clay.

Chicago Journalists Less Endangered? Lots of numbers out about how the Trib’s print/online news operation is going. But in these tough times for many Chicago journalists, Andrew Herrmann is encouraged by this line from Tribco’s national boss: “Layoffs are not expected to be part of the cost-savings measures.”
