ANDERSONVILLE — An Andersonville playground is slated to get all new equipment as part of the Chicago Plays! program.

Andersonville Playground, 5233 N. Ashland Ave., was among 77 playgrounds across the city chosen to be refurbished or rebuilt this year. Mayor Rahm Emanuel initially launched the Chicago Plays! program in 2012. Under the program, the Chicago Park District will rebuild or refurbish more than 300 playgrounds within five years, according to a park district official.

"The equipment was aging and old and not maintained in the way people would like to see," said Michael Fick, president of the West Andersonville Neighbors Together group.

"It was especially noticeable once the playlot to the north at Bryn Mawr got redone. The comparison between the two was stark."

Fick said Andersonville residents have had concerns about the condition of the playground since he became involved in the neighborhood group two years ago.

Roughly six months ago, the group learned that the Andersonville Playground was on the list of parks set to upgraded or built, he said.

"We were very pleased," Fick said. "That playlot gets a lot of use. We don't have a playlot in the neighborhood on this side of Ashland [Avenue.] It's really the primary playlot for a lot of people with small kids in the west Andersonville area."

A rendering of the upgraded playground shows an activity clubhouse, which was designed for younger kids. Construction will begin in the spring, a park district official said.
