WICKER PARK — Cheerleaders for an internationally renowned choir that brings arts and music education opportunities to inner city schools are hoping to raise $30,000 at a benefit concert on Saturday.

"Voice of Chicago," a premier group that culls its young singers from 72 Chicago schools with afterschool choirs, will perform at the Chicago Children's Choir's Signature Series concert at the Chop Shop's 1st Ward events space, 2033 W. North Ave.

Hosted by the nonprofit organization's board of ambassadors, mainly made up of young professionals who hail from all over the city, the show will also spotlight performances by Sorry for Partying, a cover band.

Set for 8 p.m. Saturday, you can buy tickets, starting at $50, here.

Chicago Children’s Choir powers nine afterschool community based neighborhood choirs, including DiMension, an ensemble for young men with changing voices.

"The goal is to bring together more than 300 young philanthropists to support arts education in Chicago and to celebrate the mission of Chicago Children's Choir," said Andrew Magda, an East Village resident who is helping to promote the event along with his fellow board member, Ken Stolman.

The 1st Ward event space, tucked into the back half of the Chop Shop, was chosen because it is lively, hip and perfect for our event, Stolman said early Thursday.

Stolman, a River North resident, said he has been involved with the board since 2010 and Saturday's show is at least the fifth annual signature series event, though the Chicago Children's Choir at large has been receiving support outside of the board for decades, since its inception in 1956.

All of the ticket proceeds from the event will directly benefit the choir's programming which serves 4,000 children annually, including singers from LaSalle II Magnet School, 1148 N. Honore St., just off Division.

Magda said the majority of singers in the choir come from low income households and Chicago Children’s Choir makes participation in its programs possible for all families.

Through their participation in Chicago Children’s Choir — which has also had the honor of performing in front of audiences in several international countries—  singers learn discipline while gaining confidence which translates from the stage to the classroom.

Magda added, "Wearing the Chicago Children's choir uniform is something every singer is proud of."

Cover band Sorry for Partying will also perform on Saturday.
