EDGEWATER — The Chicago Fire Department responded to a high-rise fire Wednesday morning in the Granville Beach building on Sheridan Road.

A fire department spokesman said no one was injured in the "small" apartment fire. At least six fire engines and dozens of other emergency vehicles blocked all lanes about 10 a.m. in the 6100 block of Sheridan.

The fire was extinguished immediately and there were no injuries, the fire spokesman said.

"It was smoking at the 23rd floor," said Granville Beach resident Michael Eggemeyer, 34. "A lot of firemen came."

He said he had just left his 7th floor apartment and entered the lobby when an alarm sounded in the building.

"I hope everything will be all right," he said. "I prayed to God that everything would be all right."

At least six buses and a line of cars were held up as fire crews worked in and around the building, at 6171 N. Sheridan Road.

By 11 a.m., Sheridan was reopened to traffic.
