CITY HALL — The battle is joined, with Mayor Rahm Emanuel's better half.

Amy Rule, who has basically made it family policy to steer clear of her husband's political career, issued an email Wednesday in an appeal for women to join Emanuel's re-election campaign.

Rule asked not for campaign contributions, but for women to volunteer for the Emanuel campaign.

"I believe, as I hope you do, that Rahm has made a huge difference in the lives of thousands of women across Chicago," Rule wrote.

She pointed to Emanuel's support for a $13-an-hour minimum wage, full-day kindergarten and expanded pre-K, free tuition at City Colleges and a new city shelter for victims of domestic violence — all as women's issues.

The email concludes with a link to a volunteer registration site and signs off "warmly" with thanks.

The election is Feb. 24, with a runoff set for April 7 if no candidate claims more than 50 percent of the citywide vote.
