HYDE PARK — On Feb. 22, the Renaissance Society will premiere new work from painter Varda Caivano.

Never before shown in the United States, the Argentina-born artist will exhibit new chaotic canvases for the exhibit “The Density of Actions.”

Caivano worked with the gallery’s chief curator, Solveig Øvstebø, to select a group of work that highlights her new interest in incorporating drawing from her London-based studio.

She has a reputation for working in a studio cluttered with half-finished canvases and is a self-described “old-fashioned painter” for her desire to have the many developing works mature together to form an idea or feeling woven through many paintings.

The result is decidedly not old fashioned, eschewing figurative representations on canvases where paint has been applied and then rubbed and scratched off in sections.

Caivano will talk about the process with Øvstebø during an opening reception from 4-7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the gallery, 5811 S. Ellis Ave.

The exhibit will run through April 19.
