DUNNING — A Belmont Terrace man who has taught at St. Francis Borgia School for more than 40 years will be lauded Sunday for his service to the school and parish as part of Catholic Schools Week.
William Cherwin, who is an alum of the Catholic school at 8033 W. Addison St., will be honored by the school's advisory board at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass, said Rose Dante, a board member.
"He had a huge impact on my life many, many years ago and I am thrilled that my daughter is one of his students, too," said Dante, whose daughter is in seventh grade.
Cherwin has coached various sports teams over the years, and volunteers as a lector and Eucharistic minister every weekend, Dante said.
St. Francis Borgia Principal Susan Betzolt said Cherwin helped her when she started at the school in 2012.
"He is an integral part of the school," Betzolt said, praising Cherwin for mentoring younger teachers and instilling school pride in generations of students. "He steps forward whenever he is asked."
Cherwin was nominated for the honor by his son, Bill.
"[He] has dedicated [his] life to St. Francis Borgia," Bill Cherwin said. "He truly does bleed blue and gold."
