LAKEVIEW — A plan to convert Wellington’s Tavern into a neighborhood-focused restaurant has fallen through.

Howard Blumenfeld announced his intent to buy Wellington’s and reopen it as a small-plate restaurant at a South Lakeview Neighbors meeting in November, but the longtime Wrigleyville resident said he is no longer interested in buying the bar, 1300 W. Wellington Ave.

“Wellington’s is pretty old,” Blumenfeld said. “I’m sure they’ll find someone to buy it, but the expenses were more than we wanted to spend.”

Blumenfeld’s plan to convert Wellington’s into a restaurant where patrons could have “a small plate, a small pour, sit, relax and just enjoy the place” was met with approval from neighbors who attended the November meeting, but Blumenfeld said the cost of renovating the bar would be too great.

Manager Paul Weymer said Wellington’s will operate “same as normal” for now, but he confirmed the bar is still for sale.

“There’s always interested buyers,” Weymer said.
