HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago has dug up rare photos of Studs Terkel by Layle Silbert and street photography from Mildred Mead of Chicago’s ghettos for a new exhibit.
“I Step Out of Myself” exhibit, which runs through March 20 at the Special Collections Research Center, 1100 E. 57th St., collects the university’s best photojournalistic portraits from its vast collections.
The exhibit brings together Eva Watson Schutze’s romanticized portraits of domestic life and the glamor of Carl Van Vechten’s 1930s Hollywood celebrity portraits.
Yousuf Karsh, Alice Boughton, Joan Eggan and Tina Modotti are also included in the exhibit.
The gallery in the Special Collections Research Center is open 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Saturdays.
