WICKER PARK — A writing and tutoring nonprofit will be celebrating its new headquarters and 10th anniversary with an open house and an appearance from writer David Eggers, one of the center's co-founders.
Scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Friday, the 826CHI Open House will offer a chance to tour the center's new Chicago headquarters, 1276 N. Milwaukee Ave., as well as The Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co, formerly called The Boring Store.
The retail arm of the operation, the store sells spy-themed items, books, journals and other fun tools to help get creative juices flowing.
The open house will also include refreshments, live music from "gypsy jazz" band Swang, and "collaborative writing exercises for the whole family," according to the event's Facebook page.
Part of a national network of nonprofits started by Eggers and former teacher Ninive Calegari, the center and Boring Store opened in 2005 at 1331 N. Milwaukee Ave.
826CHI offers free creative writing and homework help services to students ages 6-18. Volunteers called "spies" do one-on-one work with kids.
