CHICAGO — Police killed a man who was threatening suicide and attacking an officer with a knife Thursday evening, authorities said.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of East Marquette Road in Woodlawn at 6:40 p.m., according to a police statement.

Officers responded to a call of a man threatening suicide and found the 25-year-old on the porch with a knife, police said.

"As the officers exited a vehicle, the individual charged at a police officer with a knife, stabbing at the officer twice in his vest," Deputy Chief Berscott Ruiz said at the scene.

The man started walking away as police told him to put the knife down, Ruiz said. He then charged the officer again, so police shot him twice, Ruiz said.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 9:02 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
