COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — When a 24-year-old man was found guilty of murder last week, he erupted in court and punched several sheriff's deputies, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The attack happened about 2:15 p.m. on Dec. 10 after Abdallah Othman was handed a guilty verdict on 2012 murder charges, according to Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti.

Othman "caused an outburst" inside the Cook County Criminal Courthouse at 2650 S. California Blvd., Antonietti said, as he punched a sheriff's deputy multiple times in his head. It took several deputies to restrain Othman, according to prosecutors.

As authorities removed Othman from the courthouse, Antonietti said, he again began to attack, punching another sheriff's deputy in his head.

Othman, who lives in the 8800 block of Harlem Avenue in southwest suburban Bridgeview, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer.

He was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail Wednesday by Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr.

Othman hasn't been sentenced in the 2012 murder case.
