CHICAGO — What pops into your head when you think of Christmas songs?

Bing Crosby, maybe. Frank Sinatra, maybe. Run-DMC, probably not.

Director Mitchell Kezin found himself wondering why after so many years people still are blasting the classics and forgetting about the other numerous artists pumping out Christmas cheer year after year.

“Why, when Christmas rolls around, are we still stuck cozying up with Bing Crosby under a blanket of snow?” Kezin asks on an advertisement for his award-winning documentary, "Jingle Bell Rocks," which will be playing at the Vic, 3145 N. Sheffield Ave., beginning Friday.

The documentary features a slew of prominent names in the music, including Rev. Run of Run-DMC, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Dr. Demento, Bob Dorough and filmmaker John Waters. The crew of celebrities aids Kezin on his journey to discover the 12 best and most underappreciated Christmas songs.

The film will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday through Tuesday at the Vic. Tickets are $5.

The film, which runs for 1 hour and 33 minutes, won numerous awards, including the Best World Documentary at the Whistler International Film Fest in 2013, the "best of fest" Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorktown Film Festival in 2014 and Best Documentary at River's Edge Film Festival in 2014.
