Police Warn of Garage Burglaries, Armed Robberies in Austin

AUSTIN — Chicago Police are warning Austin residents of a recent uptick in garage burglaries and armed robberies in the neighborhood.

In the burglaries, thieves entered garages through side or overheard doors and stole items from inside. In one instance, the burglar also stole a car after the victim left his keys inside, according to a community alert released Wednesday.

The burglaries occurred between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday in the 5400 block of West Gladys Avenue and in the 5300 block of West Jackson Boulevard, and on Sunday in the 100 block of South Menard Avenue, police said.

In the armed robberies, a man with a dark-colored handgun demanded property from victims and then fled in a red Dodge or Chrysler minivan, according to an alert.

In one robbery, the man robbed a woman of her car and fled in it, followed by the red minivan.

The armed robberies occurred at 7:19 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of North Avenue, at 4:20 a.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of West Race Avenue and at 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the 5300 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said.
