Man Tries to Grab Boy in Austin, Saying 'I've Got Candy'

CHICAGO — Police are warning Austin residents after a man tried to abduct a boy Tuesday afternoon.

The boy was walking west in the 5300 block of West Thomas Street at 2:47 p.m. when a man came out of an alley in the 1100 block of North Lorel Avenue, police said.

The man had his arms spread and said "I've got candy for you" as he tried to grab the child. The child was able to kick the man in his leg and walk home, police said.

The man was described as a black man wearing a black jacket with gray or white fur lining the hood. He wore blue jeans with tan boots and may have a broken or chipped tooth, police said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call detectives at 312-744-8200.
