HYDE PARK — University of Chicago physics professors will celebrate the holidays with a few controlled explosions in their laboratory on Saturday.

Professors Heinrich Jaeger and Sidney Nagel will host the “Physics with a Bang! Holiday Lecture and Open House” from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Kersten Physics Teaching Center on campus at 5720 S. Ellis Ave.

In past years, Jaeger and Nagel have blown up garbage cans with liquid nitrogen, propelled themselves across the lab with fire extinguishers and severed soda cans with an electronic pulse.

Between the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. demonstrations, visitors can chat with scientists about their research and discoveries and try several hands-on activities.

Seating is limited for the demonstrations and doors open a half-hour before each lecture.

The event is free and open to the public.
