COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A 17-year-old boy was ordered held without bail Monday after prosecutors said he fatally shot Jaynisha Scheffer in Englewood in July.

Scheffer, 19, was walking with three friends under a viaduct in the 2100 block of West 69th Street when Billy Haywood, 17, rode his bike past about 7 p.m. on July 7, according to prosecutors and police.

Haywood pulled a gun and opened fire, prosecutors said, striking Scheffer in her back. She was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she later died.

Witnesses at the time said they heard a single shot ring out before seeing three girls run away.

"I could just see the blood gushing from her back," witness Mary Jenkins said. "It's sad. I'm just praying for our city."

Prosecutors on Monday said a witness positively identified Haywood in a lineup. Judge Laura Sullivan ordered the teen held without bail.
