Celebrity Chef Graham Elliot Helps Students Cook Thanksgiving Dinner

MOUNT GREENWOOD — Senior citizens on the Southwest Side will be treated to a homegrown Thanksgiving meal on Tuesday from hometown celebrity chef Graham Elliot.

Elliot, a Morgan Park resident, will prepare a farm-to-table dinner with the help of roughly 100 students from the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences.

Seven turkeys were raised at the Mount Greenwood school ahead of the meal. And the vegetables harvested from the surrounding fields at 3857 W. 111th St. will become sides.

Elliot is a renowned chef and owner of the Graham Elliot Bistro at 841 W. Randolph St. in West Town. He's also a celebrity judge on FOX's "MasterChef" and "MasterChef Junior."

Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) will host the second annual Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner. The meal will be served at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ag School. A $5 donation is requested, and reservations are required by calling 773-238-8776.

Some 300 seniors are expected to attend the event. Elliot will be assisted in the kitchen by Chef David Somerfield of the Smith Village retirement community in Morgan Park, Neil Byers, owner of the popular Beverly brew pub Horse Thief Hollow and Christine Istad, manager of Beggars Pizza.

Students in the wood shop and horticulture classes at the Ag School will make centerpieces for each of 50 tables. Guests may take home the pieces at the end of the meal.

Moraine Valley Community College will also send 15 students from its culinary arts program to assist with the holiday event. Food preparation begins as 10:30 a.m. Students and chefs will make cornbread, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pies and other trimmings along with the local turkeys.
