WICKER PARK — Construction is underway on the new Northwestern Medicine center planned next to the Bloomingdale Trail near the border of Wicker Park and Bucktown.

Northwestern Medicine is scheduled to move into a new building at 1776 N. Milwaukee Ave. about halfway through next year, Smithfield Properties president Kevin Henning said Wednesday.

Since work began in September, shortly after a building permit was issued for the $2.8 million project, the sewers, foundation, site grading, and storm water system are all complete as of this week.

The shell of the building could be up before the end of the year, Henning said.

The 15,000-square-foot, one-story medical building is made of concrete, steel, glass and aluminum, according to renderings by NORR Illinois architects.

The medical center will have 40 parking spaces.

Paul Sajovec, a spokesman for Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd), said Northwestern Medicine would be relocating its doctor's offices at 1913 W. North Ave. to the new building because "they needed more space and upgraded medical facilities."

Alma Santiago, a patient services representative for three doctors, all internists that practice out of  Northwestern Medicine's center on North Avenue, said Wednesday that the office was so busy, only one of the three doctors could even accept new patients.

"We are very popular; it's always booked here,"  Santiago said, adding that the new center will be larger and there could be space for more doctors.

A spokeswoman for Northwestern Medicine was not available to confirm if the new site would also offer immediate or emergency care. Previously, Northwestern said the new building would offer primary care, "certain diagnostics," along with some specialty health services.

Earlier this week, MedSpring, an Austin-Texas based chain of immediate care clinics, announced that it would be moving into the former PNC bank branch at 1520 N. Damen Ave. in Wicker Park.
