LINCOLN SQUARE — In advance of the upcoming holiday celebrations, the 40th Ward is collecting food donations to make the season brighter for the community's less fortunate.

Non-perishable items can be dropped off at the ward office, 5850 N. Lincoln Ave., through Dec. 20. Hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Mondays and Thursdays and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

When choosing foods to donate, keep in mind that canned goods are preferable to those in glass jars, and pop tops are favored over those that require a can opener.

Canned fish, peanut butter and canned or dried beans are excellent sources of protein; soups and stews can provide a family with a complete meal.

Whole-grain breakfast cereals, pasta sauce and powdered milk are other highly desirable items.

The donations will be distributed to food pantries within the ward, as well as the Little Brothers and Sisters of the Poor.
