CHICAGO — Four people were injured when a fire broke out in an East Garfield Park single-room occupancy hotel Saturday morning.
Firefighters responded to a fire at the J.R. Plaza Hotel, 3001 W. Jackson Blvd. shortly before 7:30 a.m., said Larry Langford, spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.
The fire, which started in apartment 311, caused one man to jump from the building before firefighters responded. He was taken to Mount Sinai in critical condition, Langford said.
The fire burned through the door of apartment 311 before moving down the hallway, Langford said.
"It didn't get in any other apartments but it burned up the hallway pretty good, and then when it went out the window, it went up and got the apartment above it on the fourth floor," Langford said.
The fire also burned through the floor before firefighters put it out. It took about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire, Langford said.
Three other people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and several others had to be rescued from their apartments via ladders, Langford said.
"The quick response by the department got the people out before they could succumb to the smoke and fire," Langford said.
Others were treated on the scene but not hospitalized, Langford said.
