HYDE PARK — The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company is looking for a strong tenor to play the condemned Colonel Fairfax in “The Yeomen of the Guard.”

The Hyde Park-based opera company will hold open auditions for the eight lead parts and the chorus from 2-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th St.

“The Yeomen of the Guard” follows Fairfax’s attempts to escape imprisonment in the Tower of London for a crime he did not commit.

Baritones who wish to play the part of assistant tormentor Wilfred Shadbolt or another specific character are asked to prepare a piece for that role. An accompanist will be provided.

Reservations for a specific audition time can be made up through 6 p.m. Friday on gilbertandsullivanoperacompany.org./auditions.html, but walk-ins are welcome.

Numerous parts as yeomen of the guard or the chorus of citizens are available for singers of all ranges.

Rehearsals will be held on Sunday afternoons and two weekday evenings from mid-January through March.

Three performances are scheduled for March 13-15 with a full orchestra.

The community opera group has performed a Gilbert and Sullivan piece every year since 1960 and last performed “Yeomen of the Guard” in 2006, then its sixth time staging the opera.
