EDISON PARK — The renovation of the playground at Monument Park is almost complete, and Edison Park officials are looking for volunteers to help put the finishing touches on the new playlot.
Monument Park, 6679 N. Avondale Ave., won all new equipment through the Park District's Chicago Plays! Playground Renovation program.
Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m.-noon Monday to help spread the wood-based soft Fibar surface on the new playground at the one-acre park. The playground was last renovated in 1990.
The small playlot is a favorite with kids in Edison Park for its close-up view of the trains rumbling along Metra's Union Pacific/Northwest Line.
A new blue train has replaced a sandbox, which was loathed by many parents for being a source of hidden health hazards.
The design features a main play structure with two slides, a bridge, ladders and activity centers.
The original swing set remains, with new seats, and the size of the playground will remain the same.
Volunteers should bring a pair of work gloves and wear sneakers or boots, Friends of the Parks advised.
Chicago Plays!, a program administered by Friends of the Parks, plans to renovate 300 playgrounds throughout the city during the next five years.
