CHICAGO — While you've been shopping for the perfect costume, sea otters and penguins at the Shedd Aquarium have been getting in the Halloween spirit as well — and the results are probably cuter than your costume (sorry).
To kick off last Friday's Shedd A-Scare-ium, trainers filled the animals' tanks with "sea-licious," Halloween-decorated treats made of ice, clams, and shrimp topped with icing as well as enrichment toys that spell out "Happy Halloween," Jack-o-Lanterns and more.
"The Halloween enrichment treats and activities aren't just for fun," according to Shedd Aquarium spokesman Michael Queroz, "but are an important part of animal care at the aquarium, creating opportunities for the animals to interact, play and explore."
While the animals have eaten all of the treats by now, Queroz said, you can see cute critters getting into the Halloween spirit by checking out our photo slideshow.
Also, if you bring your costumed kids to the Shedd between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, they'll get free Chicago Wolves Hockey kids passes until vouchers run out.
