LINCOLN SQUARE — Mankind's relationship to jack-o'-lanterns can be summed up as follows: Those who can, carve; those who can't, smash.

Folks in the former camp are invited to participate in Gene's Sausage Shop's inaugural pumpkin carving contest. The event is scheduled for 4:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at 4750 N. Lincoln Ave., and will feature food, drink and live music on the rooftop.

Competitors must drop off their carved entries at the shop prior to the competition, Oct. 27-30 (cut off point is 3 p.m. Oct. 30). Prizes will be awarded in adult and children categories.

Some tips from the pros at ExtremePumpkins.com, where plenty of inspiration can also be found:

  • Sketch your idea on the pumpkin with a dry erase marker — you can wipe it away if you don't like what you've drawn and you can also get rid of any evidence of your outline once you've carved the gourd.
  • Got power tools? If you're in it to win it, don't be afraid to use them. Knives are for amateurs.
  • Once you've finished carving, prolong the life of your work of art by spraying it with a household cleaner containing bleach.
