NORWOOD PARK — Taft High School is ready to show itself off.

School and city officials have touted the completion of a $17 million renovation as the start of a new era for the neighborhood high school, which is the city's most crowded.

An open house scheduled to take place from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 1 offers to show visitors "what $17 million looks like" and give them a glimpse at the "new" Taft High School, 6530 W. Bryn Mawr Ave.

Construction crews worked for months to overhaul nine science labs, patch crumbling brick, repair water damage and replace the school's 2,300 lockers — many of which were in use when the school opened its doors.

But the biggest change is the school's new windows, which replaced ones that were clouded with age and impossible to see through.

Taft Principal Mark Grishaber, who took the top job at the school July 1, has pledged to improve Taft's less-than-stellar reputation and make it into the "premiere Chicago neighborhood high school."
