ROGERS PARK — Police arrested two men and confiscated two assault rifles, a shotgun, ammunition and body armor at a Rogers Park apartment last week, police said.

About midnight on Oct. 9, a warrant obtained by the Evanston Police Department was executed by a Chicago Police Department SWAT team at an apartment in the 1600 block of West Farwell Avenue, said Cmdr. Jay Parrott, an Evanston Police spokesman.

Cary L. Smith, 26, was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and Steven L. Hamann, 26, was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, he said.

"The warrant execution and arrest was an excellent example of the working relationship between the Evanston Police Department and the Chicago Police Department on working toward reducing crimes of violence with firearms," Parrott said in an email.

He said the warrant was obtained by the department's "special operations group" for illegal possession of weapons. Parrott said he didn't have any other information about why the warrant was issued.

A Chicago Police spokeswoman referred questions to Evanston police.

Ald. Joe Moore (49th) said in an email to constituents Friday that a police helicopter had also assisted in the arrests.
