RAVENSWOOD — Starting Monday, southbound Ashland Avenue will be closed to traffic, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, as crews begin installing a new water main.

Drivers are being encouraged to avoid travel in the area if possible. Damen Avenue is the designated detour route.

The project, which began with water main work in the northbound lanes, is expected to continue through the end of fall construction season.

Northbound Ashland is now open between Irving Park Road and Lawrence Avenue, where water main installation work has been completed. Crews will begin resurfacing this stretch of road Oct. 20 — drivers should expect parking restrictions and lane shifts through Oct. 24 but northbound lanes will be open.

The Water Department has been systematically replacing 100-year-old water mains across the city. The simultaneous resurfacing project on Ashland is a joint effort between the city and Cook County.
