CHICAGO — A man died and another was seriously injured Saturday afternoon when a car crashed in South Chicago, severing one man's arm, police said.

The car crashed into a light pole in the 8200 block of South Chicago Avenue about 1 p.m., then careened into a parked car, said Officer Veejay Zala, a police spokesman.

The driver, a 37-year-old man, was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. The arm of a man sitting in the front passenger seat was severed, police said. The passenger, 44, was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital, in "very critical" condition, police said. He later died.

The victim was identified as Tremayne Bonds, of the 8400 block of South Manistee Avenue.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and the driver is in custody. Charges are pending against the driver, police said.

The Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
