CHICAGO — A London magazine has declared the University of Chicago the 11th best university in the world in its annual rankings, released Wednesday.

The Times Higher Education's "World University Rankings" put the Chicago research institution behind No. 1-ranked California Institute of Technology, No. 2 Harvard and No. 3 University of Oxford.

The study relied on 13 factors in the categories of teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook to give the schools a final score.

The U. of C. scored especially high for research and citations.

"Chicago has more postgraduates than undergraduates, underlining its focus on advanced academic exploration," said the Times.

In the spring 2014 semester, almost 20 percent of the student population — about 2,800 students — was international, according to University of Chicago data.

The university moved down from ninth place in the world rankings last year, but U. of C. cautions prospective students not to put too much faith into rankings, especially as methodology can change from year to year.

"Prospective students and parents should consider rankings in that context, and look beyond them to the university’s academic program, culture and opportunities for enrichment," reads a statement on the university's news page.

Evanston's Northwestern University came in 21st on the list.
