CHICAGO — A man allegedly trying to rob another person was fatally stabbed by his victim Friday night, police said.

Dimitre Beck, 22, of the 7300 block of South Peoria Street, was stabbed about 10 p.m. Friday night in the 7300 block of South Halsted Street, police said.

Police said Beck and a group of people tried to rob someone and began beating the victim in the head and body.

The victim pulled out a "cutting instrument" and stabbed Beck in self defense, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a police spokesman.

After the victim stabbed Beck, Beck's cohorts and the victim fled the scene, Sweeney said.

Beck was stabbed in the chest and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He was pronounced dead there at 2:46 a.m. Saturday morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said. An autopsy determined he died of multiple stab wounds, and classified his death as a homicide.

Area South detectives are investigating, Sweeney said.
