West Town's Design Harvest Festival Among Top Weekend Happenings

WEST TOWN —  The annual Design Harvest, where one can see the latest in home design, accessories and furnishings as well as take in square dancing, live music and on-site workshops, is headed to Grand Avenue's Design Corridor this weekend.

Here are some of the other weekend highlights for Wicker Park and Bucktown:

Friday

Indulge in the Savory Fifth Sense. In case you missed the ads all over the sidewalks, Umami Burger opened Thursday and is serving up a wide variety of hamburgers made with a briney sauce that includes soy, anchovies and vinegar, along with "secret menu" Cheesy Tots.  Peep the full menu, including cocktails, here. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 a.m, 1480 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park.

Take in some Mississippi Blues Culture.  Work by Will Armstrong tracks the history of American Blues music, from the Mississippi Delta to stops in Memphis and Chicago.  The new show, on display through Oct. 26, kicks off with a free opening reception with Armstrong from 6 to 9 pm. at Jackson Junge Gallery, 1389 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park.

Saturday

Eat and Judge Ribs. Amateur and pro BBQ chefs from several restaurants will compete against each other to win the coveted "gilded grill trophy" and cash prizes. Tickets (includes a sampling from all the contestants, plus one side dish) are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Moonshine, 1824 W. Wabansia Ave., in Wicker Park.

Partake in Buck-tober Fest. The nearly seven-hour-long crawl, which plans to hit up a several local pubs while raising money for arts education, includes an event T-Shirt and drink specials with your $40 ticket.  Meet at Noon Saturday at The Corner Bar, 2224 N. Leavitt St. in Bucktown.

Brunch and Laugh. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Congrats on Your Success presents a BYOB stand-up comedy gathering and brunch on the serene back patio at Runa Japanese Restaurant, 2257 W. North Ave. in Wicker Park.

Spruce Up Your Adobe.  Nearly 30 vendors and one dozen shops along Grand Avenue's Design Corridor are participating in Design Harvest, which includes workshops, live music, and activities for children.  There is a $5 suggested donation for entry.  The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 8 pm. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday along Grand Avenue between Damen Avenue and Wood Street.

Sunday

Get Squash and Gourds While You Still Can. The outdoor Wicker Park Farmers Market will close up shop on Oct. 26, so there are only six more Sundays left to buy fresh produce, apple cider and crepes, among other goodies. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the park, 1425 N. Damen Ave. in Wicker Park.
