O'HARE — Thousands of runners will get a chance to run a route on Oct. 5 that is usually reserved for planes getting ready to take off or land at O'Hare Airport.

Sponsored by United Airlines and the Chicago Department of Aviation, the fourth annual O'Hare 5K on the Runway will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps injured veterans.

Last year, United Airlines presented the Wounded Warrior Project with $25,000 at the event.

The race will start at 8 a.m. at 10510 W. Zemke Road. Parking is free for runners.

Heather Cherone says she wouldn't be surprised if some O'Hare neighbors take this chance to protest the noise of the new runway:

The event includes a 5K fun run, a 5K fun walk and a 5Ktimed run. A Take-off Trot will give children 4 through 10 a chance to soar at the airport starting at 9:30 a.m.

After the race, a community party will take place from 9 a.m. to noon with food and music. Airplane lovers will get an opportunity to have their photo taken in front of a United Airlines plane.

Registration fees range from $25 to $50 for the adult races and from $15 to $20 for the children's race.
