CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer performed CPR and saved the life of a newborn baby Friday, police said.

Around 8:15 p.m., a Chicago police dispatcher sent out a call searching for an officer who could perform CPR on a two-day-old baby in the 3100 block of South Lituanica Avenue in Bridgeport.

The officer responded and was met by the child's great-grandmother, holding the two-day old boy, who was not breathing and turning blue. The officer performed chest compressions on the baby until he was able to breathe on his own again, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department arrived minutes later and transported the baby to Mercy Hospital in stable condition, police said.

The officer is a 14-year veteran of the Police Department. She was recently CPR certified, police said.
