9 Things You Can Do in Wicker Park, Bucktown this Weekend

WICKER PARK — So you are not soaking in three days of music at Riot Fest in Humboldt Park or braving the crowds for the Zac Brown Band at Wrigley Field?

Have no fear: There are plenty of fun things to do and see in and around Wicker Park this weekend.

Friday

Indulge in Sliders and Craft Beer. Unite Urban Grill's Sip ‘N Slide, available from 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays- Fridays, features a trio of sliders (veggie, burger and short rib) for $9. The sliders can be paired with Unite’s rotating craft beer flight of the month, also for $9. September's flights are from Forbidden Root, Lagunitas IPA and Allagash. 1450 W. Chicago Ave. in West Town.

Explore the West of Western, aka 'WOW' District through the works of artist Tom Robinson. Just announced Thursday, the exhibit has some of Robinson's latest oil paintings on display. Catch "The New Oils" from 6-10 p.m. at Cup and Spoon, 2415 W. North Ave. in East Humboldt Park/West Bucktown.

Take Your Little Ones to the Circus All Weekend Long. The Midnight Circus returns to Holstein Park for three days of performances, the first at 7 p.m. Friday. Other shows are at 2 and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Buy tickets here. 2200 W. Oakley Ave. in Bucktown.

Nurture Your Inner Ansel Adams on a Walking Photography Workshop. If you've ever wondered what it was like to practice the art of black-and-white film photography before the digital era, an all-day workshop led by Patrick Pyszka will teach you how to shoot, process and print film. Bring your camera and wear comfortable walking shoes. All materials provided. Cost is $125 and requires advance registration. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Chicago Community Darkroom, 1000 N. Milwaukee Ave. 4th Floor.

Get Rid of Old Bills, Love Letters, Flip Phones and More. Pop by the Wicker Park Commons Shopping Mall to properly dispose of sensitive documents and old electronics. Bring up to three bags/boxes of paper to shred for free ($5 additional box/bag). The truck will be parked in the Kmart parking lot from 10 a.m. -noon, 1360 N. Ashland Ave. in Wicker Park.

Sing Your Heart Out. Relive some of your favorite childhood songs by belting them out with a big group of people at the "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" Sherman Brothers Tribute sing-along. Tickets are $15, Davenport's Piano Bar & Cabaret, 1383 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park.

Sunday

Cheer on runners as they race through Bucktown streets. Steve Jensen, president of the Bucktown Community Organization, is encouraging residents to support the runners as they cruise through the neighborhood. Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) sent out an alert to residents warning of street closures and car towing, to begin at 1 a.m. Sunday. Many Bucktown shops are offering discounts to runners who show their race bibs. See the race route here. The Bucktown 5K begins at 8:30 a.m., 1621 W. Wabansia Ave.

 

Enjoy a Garden Tour, Free Classical Music and Fresh Produce. The weekly Farmers Market (8 a.m.-2 p.m.) will have some company, with a tour of Wicker Park's gardens kicking off at 11 a.m. followed by a free classical music concert at noon. All three events are in the park (the concert will be in the field house in the event of rain), 1425 N. Damen Ave. in Wicker Park.

Celebrate "Where to? A Hack Memoir" at a Book Release party. Former cab driver Dmitry Samarov has released his much-anticipated Kickstarter-funded second book. Sunday is your chance to snag a copy and hear Samarov and other local writers read from the book. Rainbo Club, 1150 N. Damen Ave. in Ukrainian Village.
