CHICAGO — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Rogers Park Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to a call of a person shot in the 1600 block of West Juneway Terrace about 12:30 p.m., they said. They found a 19-year-old man who had been shot and was unresponsive.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. He was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Glenford S. Johnson of the 1500 block of East 62nd Street.

"It was insane. There were so many people," said resident Robert Sanoshy of the chaotic scene after the shooting.

Sanoshy said, while walking his dog, Bella, that he's "never felt unsafe" in the neighborhood, despite recent shootings.

"I've never felt worried," the 34-year-old said.

Witnesses said shots rang out in the courtyard of a building at 1662 Juneway Terrace, where workers used a mop and bucket to clean blood from one of the building's foyers. After the gunshots, they said, screaming and yelling could be heard.

Rogers Park Police Cmdr. Thomas Waldera was on the scene Thursday afternoon. He and his officers cut down crime tape and left the scene about 4 p.m.

Authorities said Johnson was a documented gang member. Friends of the victim declined to comment at the scene.

"I can't tell you nothing — but it's sad," said one woman on the scene, who declined to identify herself or her relation to the victim.

Angalia Bianca, a former CeaseFire Rogers Park supervisor, said at the scene the victim's family and friends were upset and grieving.

"Rightfully so," she added.

Area North detectives are investigating. Officials from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office did not release the 19-year-old's name Thursday evening, saying the family had yet to be notified.
