PULLMAN — A ribbon-cutting ceremony will kick off a music series at the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum on the Far South Side.

The ceremony runs from 11 a.m.-noon on Friday at the museum, 10406 S. Maryland Ave., followed by the Urban Renaissance Event Series from 2-8 p.m. Sunday. The free event aims to make a connection to African history through arts and entertainment, according to museum officials.

"[The goal] is to provide residents with a safe and supportive platform for creative expression, while exposing youths and young adults to live performances of music, dance and poetry," said Sonya Lewis, a spokeswoman for the museum."

She added that the "Museum 44: Where Hip Hop Meets History," the museum's youth and young adult programming division, was named in honor of President Barack Obama and is producing the event.

Those planning to attend should RSVP online.
