LOGAN SQUARE — The Logan Square Neighborhood Association will host Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis at “The Eagle” monument Friday for a neighborhood party at the end of the first week of class for schools citywide.

Organizers of the Party for Neighborhood Schools cite budget cuts and their desire for an elected school board as reasons to bring the community together from 4-5 p.m. Friday at the Logan Square monument. Free activities at the party will include Zumba, hip hop music and giveaways, according to a Facebook event page.

The rally, co-sponsored by Raise Your Hand, the teachers union, Friends of Goethe School and Parents 4 Teachers, is set to kick off a contentious debate focusing on recent gains at Chicago Public Schools and district-wide budget cuts after 50 open-enrollment schools were shut down before last school year.

“In light of the significant academic gains at neighborhood schools and the role neighborhood schools play as anchors in our communities, LSNA supports investing in neighborhood schools,” association organizer Bridget Murphy said. “But instead of investing in neighborhood schools, the Board of Education continues to make devastating budget cuts.”

A little more than $3 million has been cut from the budget at the association's 10 partnering schools, according to Murphy. Details here:
