LINCOLN SQUARE — Before Lincoln Square's annual German-American beer and brat bacchanalia, DANK Haus has organized "Vintage Deutsch," an event designed to showcase a more upscale side of German culture.

The celebration of fine wine and fashion will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 in DANK's Skyline Lounge, 4740 N. Western Ave.

Prepare to swap that plastic beer stein for stemware, as sommeliers extol the merits of German wines like Silvaner, a white grape that got a bad rap (e.g., Blue Nun) but is making something of a comeback, and pinot noir, which Germans produce a lot of but tend to keep to themselves.

On the fashion front, longtime boutique owner Ingrid Kaltenbach will display Old World fabrics and trim, while designer Erika Neumayer of Rare Dirndl will demonstrate how to transform traditional German dress from oom-pa-pa into ooh-la-la.

Tickets are $30 and can be bought online. The cost includes wine-tastings, snacks and a fashion show; additional beverages will be sold.

The German-American Festival will be Sept. 5-7.
