ENGLEWOOD — A nonprofit plans to give away backpacks this week to children who live near an affordable housing building it is developing for low-income veterans.

Volunteers of America Illinois is hosting the event from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Nicholson STEM Elementary School, 6006 S. Peoria St. Not far from the Englewood school is Hope Manor II, a 73-unit building, under construction at 60th and Halsted streets.

Liliana Scales, a spokeswoman for Volunteers of America, said backpacks will be given to children of veterans serviced by Volunteers of America and children in the nonprofit's child welfare program.
