CHICAGO — Two people were found dead in separate burning cars in Gresham Friday morning.

Police found the first victim around 5 a.m. in a burning car in the 8400 block of South Gilbert Court, said Officer Ana Pacheco, a police spokeswoman.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office and the Chicago Police Department Arson Unit responded to the call, she said.

Police do not know if the victim is a man or a woman, Pacheco said. The Medical Examiner's Office was unable to determine the victim's gender or age, and said the body was burned beyond recognition. Fox Chicago News identified the woman as Sherita Smith.

Around 7:45 a.m., police found a woman in a burning car in the 8600 block of South Honore Street, Pacheco said.

The woman was pronounced dead on the scene at 9:45 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

No further information surrounding these incidents were immediately available, and an investigation is ongoing. Police said there is no indication at this time the deaths are related.
