CHATHAM — One man is dead after a fire broke out in an apartment building in Chatham, officials said.

About 5:12 p.m. Tuesday, fire officials were called to an apartment building in the 7900 block of South Rhodes Avenue, said Larry Langford, a fire department spokesman.

Firefighters put out the blaze, which was limited to one unit in the building, in less than 15 minutes, but firefighters found a man in his 60s unresponsive inside the apartment.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene, Langford said. No other injuries were reported.
