EDGEWATER — The 71-year-old victim of the fatal crash Wednesday in Edgewater had been loading groceries from a nearby food pantry into the trunk of his car when a car plowed into a row of parked cars, killing him, officials said.

Charges are pending against the driver of a car involved in the crash, police said. The victim was identified as Frank Kiley, of the 3900 block of North Clark Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Lyle Allen, the director of Care For Real, a food pantry, said Kiley had picked up a donation of food and was loading it into his car just outside the pantry when he was killed.

"It was a very tough day for our team," Allen said. "We're going to figure out different ways to help out his family."

Allen also said the address given by the Medical Examiner's Office was incorrect; Kiley was a "verified" Edgewater resident, he said.

A 58-year-old man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and three others — a 69-year-old woman, a 55-year-old man, and a 64-year-old man — were taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital after the multi-vehicle crash at 11:12 a.m. Wednesday near Sheridan Road and Balmoral Avenue, officials said.

Police said a maroon Ford Focus was heading northbound on Sheridan Road when it struck two vehicles parked in the right lane. The sedan also hit a CTA bus, which was stopped in traffic in the left lane.

The driver of the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and was making "evasive maneuvers," going around vehicles stopped at a red light at Berwyn Avenue, said Sgt. Bob Kane, a police spokesman.

The driver continued speeding northbound until it struck a black car, where Kiley and another pedestrian were loading groceries, police said.

A No. 147 CTA bus was hit in the collision but didn't move upon impact, said Lambrini Lukidis, a CTA spokeswoman.

Witnesses said Kiley was standing near one of the parked cars when the maroon sedan hit a car, causing it to roll over him.
