NORWOOD PARK — The sound of trains rumbling through the Norwood Park Metra Station Friday night will compete with the guitar-rock sound of Stu Frank as part of Friendship Presbyterian Church's Friday Night Love Songs program.

The 7 p.m. concert is free, but a collection will be held for Heifer International, which works to eradicate poverty by providing families in developing countries with livestock, said Ralph Intagliata, who helps organize the 5-year-old concert program.

"The series is known as Friday Night Love Songs because the music is lovely, if not always love songs," Intagliata said. "The styles are diverse as is the crowd and over the course of an evening we all become friends."

The program — with drinks and snacks provided by the church — has raised more than $11,000 for a variety of charities, including the Night Ministry, the Taft High School music department and the New Hope Food PantryIntagliata said.

Faro Vitale, a deacon at the church who helps recruit performers, said between 50 and 75 people usually attend each concert at the train station, 6088 N. Northwest Highway, making it a fun, intimate evening.

Each concert raises between $150 and $200, Intagliata said.

Frank covers pop standards, including well-known songs by James Taylor, Van Morrison, Nat King Cole and Harry Belafonte, and often encourages the crowd to sing along.
