BUCKTOWN —  A stretch of Damen Avenue in Bucktown is closing Saturday so that a damaged wall along the Bloomingdale Trail can be removed, organizers announced Thursday in the project's weekly "News for Neighbors" update.

Damen Avenue from Churchill Avenue to Willow Street will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, however, the street could be reopened earlier than if the work is complete ahead of schedule.

Local traffic will divert to Hoyne Avenue to the west, while all other traffic will be be rerouted to Western Avenue between North and Armitage avenues.

The road is being closed so that the parapet wall on the north side of the bridge can be safely removed, organizers said.

While Damen Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic except for emergency vehicles, at least one sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists who dismount from their bikes.

The closure is part of ongoing construction of The 606, a "rails-to-trails" project long in the city's pipeline which is transforming an old railroad line into a 2.7-mile elevated trail spanning four neighborhoods on Chicago’s northwest side.

Known as The Bloomingdale Trail, the path will serves as the project's centerpiece.
