COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A West Englewood man is facing charges after he allegedly shot a man in plain sight of a police officer Wednesday.

Melvin Harvey, 19, was ordered held without bail Friday afternoon in connection with the shooting.

About 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, Harvey approached a 31-year-old man sitting inside a car in the 6500 block of South Damen Avenue, prosecutors said. Harvey then allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot inside the car, striking the 31-year-old in his buttocks.

Nearby, a police officer watched as Harvey, dressed in all black, shot the man, and the officer put out a call of shots fired as Harvey fled the scene.

Two other officers, responding to the call, spotted Harvey allegedly running across West 66th Street caught him in the alleyway on South Seeley Avenue, according to a police report.

Officers recovered a 9-mm Blue Steel semi-automatic handgun in the yard next to where Harvey was arrested, according to a police report.

The 31-year-old man who was shot was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was listed in good condition. The man would not cooperate with the police investigation, prosecutors said.

Harvey, of the 2000 block of West 66th Street, appeared in court Friday afternoon facing felony charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampis ordered Harvey held without bail. Harvey is an admitted member of the Gangster Disciples street gang, according to a police report.
