LOGAN SQUARE — Meso and Comfort Station will present “Fiesta en la Plaza” Sunday at Comfort Station.

Meso, a collaborative that explores Mexican and Chicago cuisine and identity, will partner with the Comfort Station of Logan Square to present Fiesta en la Plaza, a free family day at 2579 N. Milwaukee Ave. from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The event features kid-friendly cultural activities, including invent-your-own tacos utilizing provided grills in addition to fresh tortillas and veggies from the nearby Logan Square farmers market.

A hands-on papel picado art activity, an art display of pinatas created by neighborhood kids from summer programs and a community pinata filled with international and Chicago-based candies will be set up throughout the day.

The event aims to bring together the families of Logan Square and Avondale, according to Comfort Station.

"I am extremely excited that they are planning an event which builds relationships and intentionally engages the community's wide demographic for a unified, local celebration," Ald. Rey Colon (35th) said.

Meso, co-founded by Christina Cosio and Danny Urbina-McCarthy, worked with teachers and youths in Logan Square to develop curriculum about Mexican culture through hands-on art activities. The resulting pinatas and papel picado will be strung from trees around Comfort Station, a multidisciplinary arts space located at Milwaukee Avenue and Logan Boulevard.

Meso is partially supported by an Individual Artists Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Learn more at mesochicago.com.
